What you will LearnBeginning Art Syllabus Welcome to Visual Arts at Hillside High School in Durham, North Carolina. I am Paula Siwek, MFA Fine Arts, Pratt Institute, a teacher with Durham Public Schools for over a decade. Art courses at Hillside are demanding and provide a strong foundation for further development in the arts and creative problem solving. The course is anchored in the state core curriculum, linked below, with areas of emphasis in 21st century skills, and visual literacy. These classes will require students' full attention. Students in Visual Arts at Hillside are introduced to the elements and principles of art through the work of others as well as their own. Through digital media, students are taught techniques, visual language and history, to better understand how to create their own works. This site is our primary resource for our School's Visual Arts and Photography classes. Please feel free to search around the site. If you have any questions or fail to see information that you would like to see, please let me know.
1. All assignments must be done on or before the due dates.
2. Each day after the due date your grade goes down by two points. (10 points per week)
3. Unfinished work is graded accordingly.
4. If you are absent you are still responsible to make up all work. This includes coming and talking to me, asking for the supplies needed, and reading the instructions.
5. If your project requires extra time to be completed, you will need to make arrangements with me prior to the due date. This is your responsibility.
6. Even though art can be subjective, grading your art projects is totally objective. Each project has a rubric with specific requirements and guidelines. Follow them.
7. Unless an assignment specifically requires copying, it will be interpreted in the same manner as plagiarism and is not acceptable.
8. You are observed every day on your work practice, your attention, and respect for the class rules. These observations are considered when grading your assignments.
9. Talk quietly with those at your table. There is no speaking loudly across the room unless there is a class discussion.
10.Bullying, swearing and derogatory language is not allowed. If I hear the words n-----r, faggot, gay, we will have a conversation, and I will notify home. Encourage others in the class in a positive way. Treat them fairly and respectfully. Let’s keep this classroom comfortable and creative.
